How long do Dangling DNS entries for Api Management service, dangle for?

When a DNS entry becomes dangling, such as after deleting an API Management service, Azure reserves the DNS according to its policies. During this reservation period, only the original subscription or those linked to the same Microsoft Entra tenant can reclaim the DNS name. After the reservation ends, it becomes available for any subscription.
The reservation length varies:
Enterprise subscriptions: about 180 days
Non-enterprise: usually 7 days, sometimes up to 30 days
To make the best use of DNS space, it’s a good idea to remove unused DNS records promptly.

Yes — if your APIM was on a free (non-enterprise) subscription, the DNS name is typically released after about 7 days.
That said in some cases for non-enterprise subscriptions, the cool-off period can be up to 30 days, so while 7 days is common, it’s best to allow for that possible delay.

I also created an API Management resource under a non-enterprise subscription and deleted it on May 18, 2026. Does that mean DNS protection will be released 7 days or 30 days after May 18? I’m currently trying to create a resource with the same name in a different tenant and am getting an error, so I’d like to know the exact schedule.
