Unable to Sign in to Outlook because it does not recognize my email address

After reinstalling Windows, Outlook prompts for an email address but does not recognize it, even though Windows 365 does. Previously, Outlook Classic did not require an email/password for sign-in but I believe this is the new Outlook. What steps can be taken to authenticate my sign in and resolve this issue?

    Hello John P,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

I understand how confusing it can be when Outlook doesn’t recognize your email address after a Windows reinstall. From what you’ve shared, it sounds like you’re now using the New Outlook for Windows, which handles account authentication differently compared to the Classic version.

Here are a few steps that you can try to resolve this:

    1. Confirm your email address is valid and active

Try signing in at https://outlook.live.com using your email and password.

    • If this works: your account is active, and the issue lies within the app.
    • If not: follow the prompts to recover your account or reset your password.

    2. Add the account manually in New Outlook

    • Open Outlook
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Email accounts
    • Click Add account > Advanced setup > IMAP or Exchange
    • Enter your full email address and password manually

    3. Clear your Windows Credentials

Outlook may be using old or corrupted login information stored on your computer.

    • Open Control Panel > Credential Manager
    • Remove any saved entries related to Outlook or Microsoft accounts
    • Restart Outlook and try signing in again

    4. Repair or Reset the New Outlook App

    • Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Outlook (New) → Advanced options → Repair.
    • If Repair doesn’t help, choose Reset (you’ll need to sign in again).

Thanks for your precious time and understanding. Please feel free to let me know how it goes. I’m here to help as much as I can. Take care!

    Warm regards

    Hi,

May I ask what error you encountered when trying to sign in to the new Outlook app?
If you are using an Outlook.com account, can you try signing in to your Outlook web or Outlook mobile app and see if you can log in?

I look forward to your response.

    Stay Safe!
