Please try following the steps already shared by Q&A Assist as they cover the main configuration checks.
If the issue is still happening, you could try a few additional checks to help narrow down what’s going on:
- When you plug in the wired speaker, open Control Panel > Sound > Playback and see if a new device appears. If nothing changes at all when inserting the plug, it may indicate the system is not detecting the connection.
- In the same Playback window, right-click and enable “Show Disabled devices” and “Show Disconnected devices.” Sometimes the wired output is present but hidden and just needs to be enabled.
- If your device uses Realtek audio, you can also open Realtek Audio Console (if available) and review the connector settings, as detection behavior can sometimes be controlled there.
For a more thorough refresh, you can reinstall the audio driver from Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers
- Right-click your audio device (for example, Realtek(R) Audio or similar) and select Uninstall device
- If you see a checkbox for “Delete the driver software for this device”, leave it unchecked for now, then confirm uninstall
- Restart your Surface Laptop
After restart, Windows will automatically reinstall the audio driver and reinitialize the audio ports, which can help restore jack detection.
From a troubleshooting perspective, if your built-in speakers still work normally but no wired device is detected at all (even after these checks), it would more likely point to a detection issue with the audio jack rather than the speaker or settings.
If you’re able to confirm whether anything appears in the Playback list when plugging in the cable, that would help narrow it down further.
