Additional chat-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for business

Based on your description, Teams chat and message notifications depend on both macOS notification settings and Teams in-app notification settings, so if either side is not configured correctly, banner alerts or sounds may not appear.
I have outlined a troubleshooting sequence below to help isolate and resolve the issue.
Step 1: Verify macOS notification settings
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications.
- Select Microsoft Teams from the application list.
- Ensure Allow notifications is turned On.
- Choose a banner-style notification option so alerts can appear on screen.
- Also confirm Play sound for notification is enabled.

Step 2: Check Focus mode and display-sharing behavior
- On macOS, Focus settings can suppress Teams notifications.
- Open System Settings > Focus and confirm Do Not Disturb or any custom Focus mode is not blocking Teams. If needed, add Microsoft Teams to the allowed apps list for the active Focus mode.

Also go to System Settings > Notifications and make sure Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display is turned On. Microsoft notes that when using an external display or dock, notifications may otherwise go only to Notification Center instead of showing as banner alerts.
Step 3: Check Teams notification settings
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Select the three dots next to your profile picture, then choose Settings > Notifications and activity.
- Under Sound, make sure the notification sound options you need are enabled.
- Under Chats and channels, confirm that chat-related notification options are not set to Off, and set them to Banner and feed if you want pop-up alerts to appear.
Step 4: Test whether notifications now appear
While still in Teams > Settings > Notifications and activity, go to the Display section and use Test notification.
If the test notification does not appear, that usually indicates macOS notification permissions or Focus settings still need to be reviewed.
Step 5: Verify Mac sound output
- Open System Settings > Sound.
- Check that the correct output device is selected, raise the Alert volume, and make sure the output device is not muted. If you use multiple audio devices such as speakers, a headset, or a dock, verify the correct one is active.
