    Hi @Billy Davis

Based on your description, Teams chat and message notifications depend on both macOS notification settings and Teams in-app notification settings, so if either side is not configured correctly, banner alerts or sounds may not appear.

I have outlined a troubleshooting sequence below to help isolate and resolve the issue.

Step 1: Verify macOS notification settings

    • Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications
    • Select Microsoft Teams from the application list.
    • Ensure Allow notifications is turned On
    • Choose a banner-style notification option so alerts can appear on screen.
    • Also confirm Play sound for notification is enabled.
    • User's image

Step 2: Check Focus mode and display-sharing behavior

    • On macOS, Focus settings can suppress Teams notifications.
    • Open System Settings > Focus and confirm Do Not Disturb or any custom Focus mode is not blocking Teams. If needed, add Microsoft Teams to the allowed apps list for the active Focus mode.
    • User's image

Also go to System Settings > Notifications and make sure Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display is turned On. Microsoft notes that when using an external display or dock, notifications may otherwise go only to Notification Center instead of showing as banner alerts.

Step 3: Check Teams notification settings

    • Open Microsoft Teams.
    • Select the three dots next to your profile picture, then choose Settings > Notifications and activity.
    • Under Sound, make sure the notification sound options you need are enabled.
    • Under Chats and channels, confirm that chat-related notification options are not set to Off, and set them to Banner and feed if you want pop-up alerts to appear.

Step 4: Test whether notifications now appear

While still in Teams > Settings > Notifications and activity, go to the Display section and use Test notification.
If the test notification does not appear, that usually indicates macOS notification permissions or Focus settings still need to be reviewed.

Step 5: Verify Mac sound output

    • Open System Settings > Sound.
    • Check that the correct output device is selected, raise the Alert volume, and make sure the output device is not muted. If you use multiple audio devices such as speakers, a headset, or a dock, verify the correct one is active.

Please try the steps above and let me know whether banner notifications and sound alerts return. If the issue continues, please also share your current Teams client version and whether the issue happens only while using an external monitor, dock, or screen sharing.

    Looking forward to your response.

Follow these steps on macOS 15 Sequoia to restore both banner and sound notifications for Teams chats.

    1. Enable Teams notifications in macOS
      1. Open macOS System Settings.
      2. Go to Notifications.
      3. Under Application Notifications, select Microsoft Teams.
      4. Turn on Allow notifications.
      5. Ensure a banner style is selected so notifications appear on screen.
    2. Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing a display If using an external monitor, dock, or screen sharing:
      1. In System Settings > Notifications, locate the option Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display.
      2. Turn this toggle On so Teams banners appear instead of only going to Notification Center.
    3. Check Focus / Do Not Disturb settings If Focus (including Do Not Disturb) is enabled, Teams alerts may be suppressed.
      1. Open System Settings.
      2. Go to Focus > Focus list.
      3. Select each active Focus scenario (for example, Do Not Disturb, Work).
      4. Under Allowed Apps, add Teams so it can notify even when Focus is on.
      5. If wanting all notifications, turn off the Focus schedule under Set a schedule.
    4. Turn on sound for Teams notifications in macOS
      1. Open System Settings.
      2. Go to Notifications and select Microsoft Teams.
      3. Turn on Play sound for notification.
    5. Verify Mac sound output and volume
      1. Open System Settings.
      2. Go to Sound.
      3. Under Play sound effects through, select the correct output device (speakers/headset).
      4. Under Output and Input, select the preferred device and raise Output volume.
      5. Make sure Mute is not checked.
    6. Configure notification behavior inside Teams Once macOS is set correctly:
      1. In Teams, select Settings and more (next to profile picture) > Settings.
      2. Go to Notifications and activity.
      3. Under Display, ensure chat and channel notifications are enabled and not set to “Off”.
      4. If desired, enable Use Teams sound for notifications instead of the macOS alert sound so Teams plays its own sound.
    7. Test that notifications work
      1. In Teams, go to Settings and more > Settings > Notifications and activity.
      2. Under Display, select Test notification.
      3. A sample banner should appear with sound.
      4. If nothing appears, re-check that macOS notifications for Teams are allowed and that Focus mode is off or configured to allow Teams.

If after these steps there is still no notification sound specifically for Teams on macOS, restart the Mac to refresh audio services and test again.
