Yesterday I was signed in to my personal email: <removed PII>@gmail.com and frustrated that I cannot access Word Documents even though My business email:<removed PII>@begamontessori.nsw.edu.au has purchased business.school A5 365, I still get messages to ACTIVATE and buy a license, I cannot access Word. I needed to pull up old documents and use which i could not do. Therefore I bit the bullet and purchased an annual Personal M365 subscription for $159.00 and installed, I did not receive an order confirmation in my email: <removed PII>@gmail.com nor am I able to ACTIVATE Word as it still says that <removed PII>@gmail.com has no license. What email or what account did this subscription go to and HOW do I activate. Receipt for Your Payment to Microsoft Pty. Limit...

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Are you seeing this message on a Windows PC or a Mac?
    2. When you sign in to your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services does the subscription show as active there, or still unpaid?
    3. Did PayPal show a Microsoft order number or transaction ID on the receipt?

If you haven't tried anything yet (Windows):

    • Make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is linked to.
    • Then, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your subscription status.

    If you're using Mac (MacOS):

    • Open any Microsoft 365 app such as Word. > At the top of the screen, select Word (or the app name) in the menu bar. > Select About Word. > Click More Info… > Select "Refresh License".
    • After that, close any open documents and completely restart all Microsoft 365 apps so the license refresh can take effect.

If the subscription does not appear under any account and you did not receive a Microsoft order confirmation email, the purchase may not have been linked correctly to a Microsoft account.

Let us know what you find on the Services & Subscriptions page, and whether the purchase appears there. That will help determine the next step.

The Microsoft 365 Personal subscription was purchased, but the Gmail account currently signed into Word has no license associated with it, so Word remains unlicensed/read‑only.

To locate the subscription and activate Word, follow these steps:

    1. Confirm which account owns the subscription
Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and sign in with each possible personal Microsoft account (for example, the Gmail address if it has a Microsoft account, or any other personal addresses ever used with Microsoft).
The Microsoft 365 Personal subscription must appear there for that account to be able to activate Office. If it does not appear for a given email, that email is not the licensed account.
    2. Sign in to Office with the licensed account
Once the correct account is identified (the one where Microsoft 365 Personal shows as active):
      1. Open Word on the computer.
      2. Select the name/profile icon at the top and choose Sign out of all accounts.
      3. Close Word, then reopen it.
      4. When prompted, select Sign in and use the personal Microsoft account that shows the active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription on the Services & subscriptions page.
      5. Wait for activation to complete and verify that the “Unlicensed” or “Activate” banner disappears.
    3. If Word is still tied to the work/school account
If Word continues to ask to activate using the school/business address (the begamontessori.nsw.edu.au account) and shows no license:
      • Sign out of that work/school account inside Word as above.
      • Make sure the sign‑in used in Word is the personal Microsoft account with the active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, not the school account.
    4. If no account shows the subscription
If none of the accounts checked on the Services & subscriptions page show Microsoft 365 Personal, the purchase is not associated with any accessible Microsoft account. In that case, contact Microsoft support with the PayPal receipt so the subscription can be located and correctly associated with a Microsoft account; until that association exists, Word cannot be activated.

Note: The school Business/School A5 license must be assigned by the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin to the school account to activate desktop apps. If that license is not assigned, the school account will not activate Word on the desktop.
