Modern Warfare 3 will not launch from the Xbox PC App (Windows 11)

Hello,

I have been playing Call of Duty on my PC since buying it. I recently decided I wanted to play zombies again from MW3. I went through the Xbox app and installed MW3. It installs, but when I try to launch the game it crashes and sends an error code

0xc0000005 (0) N

I have researched and followed several videos on how to fix it, but it does not work.

What can I do to resolve this?

(I have uninstalled and reinstalled the xbox app, Call of Duty and MW3. Drivers are up to date)

I found a solution.

I rolled back my amd graphics card driver to the previous version and both mw2 and mw3 now launch perfectly.

Did a complete uninstall of the driver, deleting everything. Then I stalled the previous version.

Hope that helps. Its was the only solution I found

    Hello Fiona Anderson,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Before we proceed further, may I know if this issue happens with any other game than MW3? Also, may I know what you have tried so far so I don't need to give you repetitive suggestions?

    I'm waiting for your reply.

Use the following steps on Windows 11 to troubleshoot MW3 not launching from the Xbox app and crashing with 0xc0000005:

    1. Make sure Windows and Microsoft Store components are healthy
      • Check Windows Update: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install all available updates.
      • Update Microsoft Store and Xbox app:
        • Open Microsoft Store.
        • Go to Library > Get updates and let it update Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, and the Xbox app if listed.
    2. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
      • A blank command window opens and closes after a few seconds; Microsoft Store will open automatically.
      • Try launching MW3 again from the Xbox app.
    3. Repair or reset the Xbox app and Gaming Services
      • Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • Find Xbox and Gaming Services.
      • For each, select Advanced options and try Repair first; if that does not help, use Reset.
    4. Reinstall Gaming Services via PowerShell (fixes many launch issues)
      • Right‑click Start, choose Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Terminal (Admin).
      • Run:
             get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers

      • In the same window, run:
             start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN

      • In the Store page that opens, install Gaming Services (accept the UAC prompt).
      • After installation completes, restart the PC and try MW3 again from the Xbox app.
    5. If installs or updates hang in Store/Xbox
      • Ensure the Microsoft Store Install Service is running:
        • Press Windows key + S, type services.msc, press Enter.
        • Find Microsoft Store Install Service.
        • If Disabled, set Startup type to Automatic, click Start, then OK.
      • If downloads are stuck, adjust Delivery Optimization under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization (for example, enable and set bandwidth limits appropriately), then retry.
    6. Reinstall MW3 from the Xbox app
      • In the Xbox app, uninstall MW3.
      • Restart the PC once more.
      • Install MW3 again and then launch it directly from the Xbox app.

If the game still fails with 0xc0000005 after these platform fixes, the issue is likely specific to the game itself and its files or anti‑cheat; in that case, use the publisher’s repair tools or support channels in addition to the steps above.
