Hello All

I have a user that has a webpage that she often visits that had the A (with 2 waves near it that said read aloud) next to the Star (favorite button) in the address line in Edge on Windows 11
it's not longer there. she can do the CTRL+Shift+U to get it back and she can go to the 3 dots>>More Tools and click Read aloud and it appears but the minute I close the browser it goes away

its on other Websites but not all and it's not on the one she uses or needs it the most for

I cleared cookies and cache and even did a reset browser but she still has to do CTRL+Shift+U to get it to appear when she never used to have to do that

is there a way to get it to stay permanently?

    Hi Lynn Pulte,

I understand how inconvenient this is, especially when the user relies on Read Aloud for a specific webpage and it used to be available directly from the address bar.

Based on your description, Read Aloud itself does not appear to be completely broken, since it still works with Ctrl + Shift + U or from Settings and more (...) > More tools > Read aloud. This may be related to how Edge detects readable content on that particular webpage, or how that page is built. Some webpages may show the Read Aloud or Immersive Reader-related icon in the address bar, while others may not. Microsoft Edge documentation also notes that Read Aloud can be opened from the context menu, More tools, or by using Ctrl + Shift + U, while Immersive Reader is only available on some webpages.

To help narrow it down, please check:

    • Whether Microsoft Edge is fully updated from Settings and more (...) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
    • Whether the affected page is a normal public webpage, a web app, an internal site, or a sign-in-required page.
    • Whether the same page shows the Read Aloud icon in another Edge profile, Guest profile, or on another Windows 11 device.
    • Whether the issue still happens in an InPrivate window.
    • Whether any extensions, such as ad blockers, script blockers, accessibility tools, or reader-mode extensions, may be affecting the page.

Since clearing cache and resetting Edge have already been tried, I would not keep repeating those steps. At the moment, there does not appear to be a user setting that permanently pins the Read Aloud icon beside the Favorites star for every website. If the icon is missing only on one particular site, the practical workaround is to use Ctrl + Shift + U or More tools > Read aloud for that page.

If this behavior changed recently, you may also submit feedback from Settings and more (...) > Help and feedback > Send feedback, and include the Edge version, Windows 11 version, the type of affected webpage, and the fact that Ctrl + Shift + U still works while the address-bar icon no longer appears.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, cannot directly change Microsoft Edge behavior or access backend systems. I can only help narrow down and suggest possible workarounds. If you have extra questions about this answer, please click "Comment".
