Changing the alternate account on a Visual Studio (MSDN) subscription does not move or duplicate already-activated Azure benefits; it only changes which identity can be used going forward for Azure DevOps and Azure.
From the documentation:
- Adding or editing an alternate account “doesn't provide a copy of subscription to the other account; it only provides access to the two benefits with the alternate account.”
- When the sign-in or alternate email is changed, the new identity is used for future benefit activations. Previously activated benefits remain tied to the identity that was used at the time of activation.
In this scenario:
- The Azure dev/test subscription and monthly credit that were activated with the personal account remain associated with that personal account.
- Changing the alternate account to a secondary work account does not transfer the existing Azure subscription or reset the “offer limit”; therefore, attempts to re-activate the same benefit with the new account show that the offer limit has been reached.
To proceed, the supported options from the provided guidance are:
- Continue to use the personal account for the already-activated Azure dev/test subscription and monthly credit.
- Use the new work account only for new benefit activations going forward (for example, if a different Visual Studio subscription or benefit becomes available to that identity).
- If the User Principal Name (UPN) or primary work identity has changed, either:
- Reassign the Visual Studio subscription to the new UPN, or
- Set the new UPN as an alternate account (already done in this case), and then use that identity for future Azure DevOps/Azure sign-ins.
There is no supported path in the provided documentation to “move” an already-activated Azure dev/test benefit from the personal account to the new work account or to re-activate the same offer on a different identity once the offer limit is reached. For further assistance specific to the subscription and benefits, contacting Visual Studio subscriptions support is required.
