Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with a university-managed computer that is linked to my university account.

After performing some updates on the device, I was prompted to enter the BitLocker Recovery Key in order to continue accessing Windows. I signed in to my university account and checked the Recovery Keys page, but I could not find the recovery key associated with this device, even though the device is still listed under my account, as shown in the attached screenshots.

I would appreciate your assistance in retrieving the BitLocker Recovery Key for this device or providing guidance on the appropriate steps to regain access to the system.

For reference, screenshots demonstrating the issue have been attached.

Thank you for your time and support.

For a university-managed, BitLocker‑encrypted device, the BitLocker recovery key is typically stored and controlled by the organization’s IT department, not by the individual user.

Follow these steps:

  1. Verify all self‑service locations
    • If the device is Microsoft Entra (Azure AD)–joined to the university account, check the My Account / Devices portal and use View BitLocker Keys for the specific device, as described in the “Manage your work or school account connected devices from the Devices page” article.
    • If the device is Intune‑enrolled and you have access to the Intune Company Portal:
      1. From another device, sign in to the Company Portal website.
      2. Go to Devices and select the locked PC.
      3. Select Get recovery keyShow recovery key and use the displayed 48‑digit key on the BitLocker recovery screen.
  2. If no key appears in any portal
    • For organization‑managed devices, the recovery key is often backed up centrally by IT. If it does not appear in your account or in Company Portal, contact the university IT helpdesk or support team and provide:
      • The device name as shown in your account/portal.
      • The first 8 digits of the BitLocker recovery key ID shown on the blue recovery screen.
    • IT can then look up the matching recovery key in their management systems (for example, Microsoft Entra or Intune) and provide it to unlock the device.
  3. If the organization cannot provide a key
    • If the recovery key cannot be found anywhere (account portals, Company Portal, or IT’s management tools), BitLocker encryption cannot be bypassed. In such cases, the only remaining option is to reset or reimage the device, which erases all data on the encrypted drive.

Because this is a university‑managed device and the key is missing from the self‑service pages, the next and most important step is to contact the university IT department and request the BitLocker recovery key lookup using the recovery key ID displayed on the device.
