Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
Azure startup sponsorship credits can stop applying and lead to credit card charges in several common situations:
- Sponsorship credits are exhausted or expired
- Microsoft for Startups Azure credits are valid for up to two years from activation and can’t be extended.
- When all credits are consumed, the subscription automatically switches to pay-as-you-go billing and charges the primary payment method (credit card).
- If usage ramped up (for example, new services, higher SKUs, or forgotten resources), the remaining ~USD 3,000 could have been consumed faster than expected.
- Usage billed under a different billing profile or subscription
- Charges can occur even when sponsorship credits remain if:
- The active resources are in a different subscription that isn’t linked to the startup sponsorship billing account, or
- A different billing profile is being used where no credits are available.
- In the Azure portal, go to Cost Management + Billing → Billing profiles and Subscriptions to confirm that active resources are under the billing account that holds the startup sponsorship.
- Charges can occur even when sponsorship credits remain if:
- Services not covered by credits
- Some Azure services may not be covered by the sponsorship. Those services are charged directly to the credit card even if sponsorship credits remain.
- Unexpected or unrecognized usage
- To understand where the credits went and why charges appeared:
- Review the latest invoice for the subscription.
- Use Cost analysis in Cost Management + Billing to see which resources and services generated charges.
- Check audit logs and user permissions if there’s a possibility someone else created or scaled resources.
- If usage or charges still don’t make sense, create an Azure support request so the billing team can review the sponsorship and charges in detail.
- To understand where the credits went and why charges appeared:
- Confirming sponsorship and remaining credits
- In the Azure portal, use Cost Management + Billing → Payment methods / Billing profiles to:
- Confirm that the startup sponsorship is active.
- Verify which billing account and subscriptions are associated with the credits.
- In the Azure portal, use Cost Management + Billing → Payment methods / Billing profiles to:
If charges are clearly unexpected after these checks, open a billing support request from the Azure portal (Help + support → new support request, choose Billing) so Microsoft can investigate and, if appropriate, adjust charges.
