After I charge my Laptop 7, the charger (brick) is very, very hot. I cannot hold it after a second or two. This and my laptop 7 is still under warranty.

Stop using that charger immediately. An overheating power brick is a fire and burn hazard.

A Surface power supply can feel warm during normal use, but it should not be so hot that it cannot be held for more than a second or two. Combined with the fact that the device is under warranty, this should be treated as a potential safety and hardware issue rather than normal behavior.

    Take these steps:

    1. Stop using the charger immediately
      • Unplug the power supply from both the wall outlet and the Surface Laptop 7.
      • Let the charger cool down completely in a safe, non-flammable area.
    2. Inspect for visible damage or heat signs
      • Check the power brick, cables, and connectors for:
        • Burned or melted plastic
        • Discoloration, charring, or deformation
        • Any signs of swelling or heat damage
      • If any such signs are present, do not plug it back in.
    3. Use only genuine Surface power supplies
      • Ensure the charger is a genuine Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed Surface power supply designed for the device. Using non-genuine or incorrect power supplies can cause overheating and damage.
    4. Try a different outlet and remove accessories (optional, only if no damage is visible)
      • If there is no visible damage and the charger has cooled, plug it into a different wall outlet and charge the Surface without any high‑power accessories attached.
      • If it again becomes extremely hot, stop using it and proceed to service.
    5. Start a service order for the power supply (and device if needed)
      • Since the Surface Laptop 7 is under warranty and the charger is overheating, submit a service order:
        1. Go to Microsoft account | Select device for service and sign in.
        2. Select the Surface Laptop 7, choose the issue related to power/charging, and follow the steps to request service or a replacement power supply.
      • If the charger shows any melting or heat damage, or if there are concerns about safety, this should be reported as a potential safety issue. Be prepared to provide:
        • Model and serial number of the Surface and power supply
        • Description of the overheating
        • Clear photos of any visible damage
    6. If the device itself feels too warm
      • If the Surface Laptop 7 itself feels excessively hot or shows a thermometer icon, turn it off, move it to a cooler place, and let it cool for at least five minutes. If the issue persists, contact support.

Do not continue using a charger that becomes too hot to touch, as this may pose a safety risk and can damage the device or battery.
