How to keep group tabs in Edge after closing?

I wasn't experiencing this problem until yesterday. However, since this morning, whenever I launch Microsoft Edge, all of my previously saved tab groups appear to be gone. As a result, I have to reopen the tabs and recreate the groups every time.

I've already verified that the "Open tabs from the previous session" setting is enabled, but the issue still persists.

    Hi Mohammad Amir saraee,

I can understand how inconvenient this is, especially if you use tab groups to keep several tasks organized.

A few questions that may help narrow this down:

    • When you reopen Edge, are the tabs completely gone, or do the tabs return but the tab group names/colors are missing?
    • Did this start after an Edge update, Windows update, or after installing/changing any extension?
    • Are you using a normal Edge window, or are these tabs inside Edge Workspaces?
    • Does this happen with only one Edge profile, or with every profile on the device?

In the meantime, please try the following:

    • Go to edge://settings/help and make sure Microsoft Edge is fully updated, then restart the browser.
    • Check whether Edge is set to clear data when it closes. Open: edge://settings/privacy/clearBrowsingData/clearOnClose If anything related to browsing data is enabled there, temporarily turn it off and test again.
    • If you use sync, open edge://settings/profiles/sync and make sure sync is enabled. If you see an option for Workspaces and Tab Groups, turn it on as well.
    • Temporarily turn off extensions from edge://extensions/, especially any tab manager, session manager, privacy, or cleanup extensions. Then create a small test tab group, close Edge normally, and reopen it.
    • Test with a new Edge profile by going to edge://settings/profiles and selecting Add profile. Create a few test tabs and a tab group there, then close and reopen Edge.
    • Also make sure Edge is being closed normally, not through Task Manager or a cleanup tool, since forced closing can sometimes prevent the last session from being saved correctly.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Edge restores the last open tabs (including tab groups) only when they belong to the same profile and session, and when startup and data‑clearing settings allow it.

To keep tab groups after closing Edge, verify these settings and conditions:

    1. Confirm Edge startup is set to restore previous tabs
      1. Select Settings and more (…)
      2. Go to Settings > Start, home, and new tab page.
      3. Ensure Open tabs from the previous session is selected.
    2. Make sure browsing data isn’t cleared at close If Open tabs from the previous session is enabled but browsing data is cleared each time, Edge still keeps the URLs but other session data may be affected.
      • In the same Start, home, and new tab page area, avoid enabling options or policies that clear all session data on close.
    3. Use the same profile every time Tab groups are profile‑specific. If Edge starts with a different profile (for example, a newly created “Profile 2”), previous groups will not appear.
      • Check the profile button in the title bar and always open Edge with the profile where the groups were created.
    4. Keep sync and profile consistent across devices Startup behavior and permanent startup pages are synced only when Settings sync is turned on:
      1. Go to Settings and more (…)
      2. Settings > Profiles > Sync.
      3. Turn on Settings so startup configuration is consistent.

If a different profile was created or used recently, switch back to the original profile and the tab groups should be restored when Open tabs from the previous session is enabled.
