To use Excel on the laptop offline, install the desktop version of Microsoft 365 apps (which includes Excel) using the Office offline installer.

For a home subscription (Microsoft 365 for home):

    1. Make sure the PC meets the Microsoft 365 system requirements.
    2. Go to the Office offline installer page and select the Download button.
    3. In the Install window, in Choose a version, select Offline installer.
    4. Choose the desired language and select Install.
    5. When prompted by the browser, choose Save, Open, or Save File depending on the browser to download the installer file.
    6. After download completes, open the Downloads folder and double‑click the downloaded .img file (for example, O365HomePremRetail.img).
    7. A virtual drive window opens. If it does not, open File Explorer and open the new virtual drive (for example, D: or E:) that contains the Microsoft 365 installation files.
    8. Run Setup from that virtual drive to install Microsoft 365 apps, including Excel, onto the laptop.

Once installed, Excel runs as a desktop app and can be used offline. An internet connection is still required periodically for activation and updates, but not for everyday offline editing of files stored on the device.

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, by default the Office apps may be saving your files to OneDrive online.

Open Excel, then select File - Options.

Click Save on the left, and on the right you can change the save behaviour to set Office to save to your PC by default, not OneDrive.

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, from time to time, your PC will need to be connected to the Internet when your Office apps licence is checked for validity.
