For personal Microsoft accounts, Microsoft now says you can no longer add a phone number as a new security method. Their current support article states: “For increased security, you can no longer add a phone number” when adding a new way to verify sign-in. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/microsoft-account-security-info-verification-codes-bf2505ca-cae5-c5b4-77d1-69d3343a5452 (see the first and last items in the gray text box). You will have to use alternative email, authentication app or passkey option instead.

The option to add a phone number as a sign‑in alias has been removed from some Microsoft account pages. Phone numbers are now handled mainly as security info (for verification codes) rather than as additional usernames.

To manage phone numbers for the account, use the Security section instead of the “Manage how you sign in” page:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Security page: https://account.microsoft.com/security and sign in.
    2. Select Manage how I sign in or Manage how you sign in (under Security).
    3. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
    4. Choose the available option (for example, an email address or an authenticator app) and follow the prompts.

    Note:

    • According to the current security-info guidance, new phone numbers can no longer be added as verification methods in some regions; instead, use an email address, authenticator app, or passkey.
    • Existing phone numbers that were previously added may still appear under Security info; ensure they are up to date.

If a phone number is needed specifically for Microsoft Teams (free) or Skype sign‑in/search, manage it through the Microsoft account alias page when available, or follow the Teams/Skype guidance to change or remove existing numbers.
