Introduction

Today's learners have unprecedented access to AI tools, but some AI tools are designed to provide answers instead of helping learners develop their own understanding. Overreliance on this type of generative AI can weaken the essential thinking and productive struggle required for real learning. The Study and Learn Agent in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is designed to solve this problem. Built on learning science principles and integrated directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot for Education users ages 13+, it transforms AI from an answer-generator into a true learning partner.

This module introduces how Study and Learn supports inquiry-led understanding, guided practice, and retrieval-based study. Through scaffolded coaching, interactive activities, and reflection-driven dialogue, learners uncover what they know, identify gaps, provide actionable feedback, and strengthen their thinking. Ever patient, and adaptive in its coaching, it personalizes learning, fosters student agency, mitigates against learning erosion but instead creates an opportunity for every learner to get coached when, where and in the ways they need it.
