How do I change the email address that my account is linked to?

My current email provider has told me that they are no longer supporting the domain name that I have in my email address and that I therefore need to get a new one. I have had that account for over 20 years and use it nearly everywhere, including my Teams account. I will therefore need to change the email address linked to my account. I don't want to set up a whole new account as I will lose my chats etc.

    Hello

The AI answer only gives you half of the process. AI answer will change the alias, which is the username used to sign into the account.

Another important step after that, go to Security > Manage how I sign in. Here you want to update your contact info. If you used the ISP domain email address to receive 2FA code, then you want to add a different method and remove this one.

To keep the same Microsoft Teams Free account and just change the email address it’s linked to, update the email on the underlying Microsoft account rather than creating a new Teams account.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft: https://account.live.com/names/Manage and sign in with the email address currently linked to the Teams Free account.
    2. Select Add email.
    3. Add the new email address and complete the verification process so it’s added as an alias on the Microsoft account.
    4. After it’s added, select Make primary on the new email address so it becomes the primary alias (the main sign-in email).
    5. Once the new email is primary, remove the old email address from the account if desired.
      • Note: The old email must not be the only alias; add the new one first. Removing the old email ensures people can’t search for the Teams profile using that old address.
    6. To make sure the change is reflected in Microsoft Teams Free:
      • On desktop: sign out of Teams and sign back in using the new email address.
      • On mobile: uninstall the Teams app, reinstall it from the store, then sign in with the new email address.

All chats, teams, and data stay with the same Microsoft account, so they remain available after changing the sign-in email.
