I wish to re-install Windows 10 on another computer after a reset failure that left my login unchanged but using the recommended Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive, it asks me if I want to make changes to my Windows 11 machine. I am afraid it will wipe out my Windows 11 on my good computer

You can allow it. But make sure you pick the option to create an installation media. Then make sure you select the usb flash drive location. It will wipe the flash drive so make sure you have nothing important there.

The Media Creation Tool will not change or wipe the current Windows 11 PC just by running it.

How it works in this scenario:

    1. On the working Windows 11 PC, download and run the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from the Windows 10 download page.
    2. In the tool, when asked “What do you want to do?”, choose Create installation media for another PC, then select Next.
    3. Select the language, edition (Windows 10), and architecture, then choose USB flash drive and select the USB you want to use.
    4. The tool only downloads Windows files and writes them to the USB. It does not reinstall or modify Windows on the PC where the tool is running.
    5. When the USB is ready, safely remove it from the Windows 11 PC.
    6. On the problem computer, boot from this USB and follow the prompts to install or reinstall Windows 10.

    Important notes:

    • Creating installation media does not affect the Windows 11 installation on the good computer.
    • The reinstall on the other PC can remove apps and files depending on the options chosen there, so back up anything important on that target PC first.

For full details on creating media and reinstalling:

    • Use the Windows 10 section of Create installation media for Windows.
    • Then follow Reinstall Windows with the installation media on the problem PC.
