A Microsoft offering that enables tracking of cloud usage and expenditures for Azure and other cloud providers.
Separate invoices are controlled at the billing profile and subscription level, not per individual VM. To get separate invoices for the two VMs, link each VM’s subscription to a different billing profile and/or invoice section.
For a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) billing account:
- Structure billing with billing profiles and invoice sections
- Each billing profile represents one invoice. A monthly invoice is generated at the beginning of the month for each billing profile and includes all Azure usage and purchases linked to that profile.
- Within a billing profile, invoice sections group costs on that invoice.
- To get separate invoices, use different billing profiles; to separate costs on the same invoice, use different invoice sections.
- Create a new billing profile or invoice section (if needed)
- Sign in to the Azure portal.
- Go to Cost Management + Billing.
- Under Billing profiles, select an existing profile or create additional profiles as needed (each profile generates its own invoice).
- For each billing profile, you can create multiple invoice sections via Billing profiles → select profile → Invoice sections → Add.
- Link each subscription to the desired billing profile and invoice section
- Sign in to the Azure portal.
- Go to Subscriptions and select Add to create a new subscription, or use existing ones.
- When creating a new subscription under an MCA billing account:
- Select the billing profile that should be billed for that subscription’s usage.
- Select the invoice section where the subscription’s charges should appear.
- For existing subscriptions:
- Go to Cost Management + Billing.
- Select Azure subscriptions (for Azure resources) or Recurring charges (for Marketplace/AppSource products).
- For the target subscription, select the ellipsis (…) and choose Change invoice section.
- Select the desired billing profile and invoice section, then Save.
- Changes apply to future invoices; existing invoices can’t be amended.
Result:
- If each subscription is linked to a different billing profile, each subscription (and its VM) will appear on a separate invoice.
- If both subscriptions share a billing profile but different invoice sections, they will be on the same invoice but under separate sections.
Note: For MOSP (classic Pay-As-You-Go) accounts, invoices are per subscription by design, based on the subscription’s billing period, so each subscription already has its own invoice.
