My teams guest account got locked

Hi there,

Due to work relation with Microsoft engineering, I have a Teams guest account and Cisco account.

One month ago, I found that I couldn't send message on Teams, and found the account was locked.
After working with our counter part in Microsoft, they tried to remove and add me back, it is still the same problem, said my account is locked.

Since I used this account to work with Microsoft engineering team on weekly bases, I would like to restore my guest account ASAP.

I believe that the block is due to Microsoft erroneous logic/operation, since my home user account is working properly.

If your personal account itself is not blocked, meaning you can still sign in to Teams with your own account, and the block only affects your guest access, then this needs to be resolved by the organization that invited you.

Guest access is managed by the inviting organization, not by the guest user or support. If they need Microsoft support, their organization admin can open a support ticket from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, but it needs to be requested by them.

However, if your personal account is also blocked when you try to sign in normally, that would be a different issue.

The organization invited me is Microsoft, they have tried removing and adding me back, which did not help.
They will ask me to try to reset password, which I have tried over the weekend and didn't help.
They will ask me to open a Microsoft support ticket, please let me know how and talk to support agent if possible.

No, that's not how it works. Whoever you work with in Microsoft tenant doesn't necessarily understand it either and they shouldn't send you to support. I am a tenant admin user myself and I work with guest users all the time. If my guest user bypasses me to work with Microsoft support, that's a privacy breach.

When you are a guest user, it is like you are being invited to visit/work with people in an office building. When you enter the office building, you work with security team to get clearance to access that building. That security, that process, is managed by the office building/the organization.

Simply removing you and adding you back doesn't remove your user that can be already flagged as a risk (one of the possible examples, but we have no visibility as an outsider to review/confirm that). In above example, the organization tenant admin needs to go to https://aka.ms/RiskyUsers and select Dismiss user risk for your specific guest user. Otherwise, you can go through the "building" security again, they will still see you as a risk and block you. Hence, removing and re-adding you is moot point. There can be other reasons too, but only admin user can review / access them.

You are welcome. I usually spare guest users this detail; as admin user when you reach out should know this. I am a guest user in Microsoft tenant too, so I know, the person/group you work with, may not necessarily know what tenant management work is like. Just have them raise a ticket internally via Microsoft's internal support process.
