I get the message "This account can't be used for Microsoft for Startups credits"

Hi,

I'm trying to apply to the Microsoft for Startups program for our new startup, "TallerFix - The first AI-Native Operating System for the Auto Industry in LatAm."

You asked for a credit/debit card. I provided a debit card in my name, but it wasn't accepted. I entered a credit card in my wife's name (she's also a collaborator at our new startup, TallerFix.app, based in Mexico), and although it was accepted, now when I try to continue with the application, I just see the message: "This account can't be used for Microsoft for Startups credits. - Sign in with an eligible Microsoft account to access this offer."

I would appreciate your help so we can continue. We already have a working MVP of our app (https://go.tallerfix.app) with just over 20 clients in beta. We also have our bilingual landing page published (https://tallerfix.app). We started developing it entirely based on the Google stack, but we want to base it on the Azure AI Foundry suite and Microsoft's new MAI edge models.

I hope you can help us.

Thank you in advance.

    Hii @Sergio Ruíz Vidal

Thank you for providing the details, and congratulations on your progress with your startup, it sounds like you’ve already made great traction. The error “This account can't be used for Microsoft for Startups credits” typically indicates that the Microsoft account currently signed in is not eligible or not properly associated with the Microsoft for Startups offer.

    Possible causes:

    1. Incorrect account type or mismatch

Microsoft for Startups requires using a personal Microsoft account (MSA) for registration and activation.

    • If you are signed in with a work/school (Entra ID) account, it will not be accepted
    • If you switch accounts during the process, the system may not recognize the offer

Also, the same Microsoft account used to apply must be used to activate credits.

    1. Account is not considered a “new Azure customer”

Startup credits are intended for new Azure users. If the account has:

    • Previously created an Azure subscription (including Free Trial or Pay‑As‑You‑Go), or
    • Already redeemed Azure credits in any program
    1. Application or eligibility is not fully completed

You may see this message if:

    • The Microsoft for Startups application is still incomplete or not approved, or
    • Required verification steps (identity/business/LinkedIn) are still pending
    1. Credits are tied to a specific account and offer

    Startup credits are:

    • Assigned to a specific Microsoft account and sponsorship profile
    • Not automatically available across multiple accounts

If the current signed‑in account does not have an active offer, the portal will show this message.
    Recommended steps

    Please try the following:

    1. Sign out of all Microsoft sessions and sign back in using the same personal Microsoft account (MSA) used to apply
    2. Go to the Microsoft for Startups portal and confirm that:
      • Your application is submitted and approved
    3. In Azure Portal > Cost Management + Billing:
      • Check whether a Startup/Sponsorship billing account exists
    4. Avoid switching accounts during activation and ensure consistent login across all steps

I think Startups credits work with an eligible personal MSA, and you can try signing out and signing in again with that same personal MSA used for the application; when the message stays, ask Azure support to check that MSA’s eligibility.

The Microsoft for Startups credits must be activated with a specific type of account and billing setup. The error "This account can't be used for Microsoft for Startups credits" typically indicates that the current sign-in or billing configuration doesn’t meet those requirements.

Based on the documented rules, check and correct the following:

    1. Use a personal Microsoft Account (MSA), not work/school
      • Microsoft for Startups requires a personal Microsoft Account (MSA) for registration and credit activation.
      • Work, school, or company accounts (Microsoft Entra ID) are not accepted for activation and can cause eligibility or activation errors.
      • Ensure sign-in is with a personal email-based MSA (for example, a gmail.com, outlook.com, hotmail.com address) that was used during the program registration.
    2. Ensure the same MSA is used for both application and activation
      • The MSA used to apply to Microsoft for Startups must be the same MSA used to activate Azure credits and benefits.
      • If a different account is used during Azure setup, the system can block the offer and show an ineligible-account message.
    3. Complete Azure account setup correctly
      • After the application paths converge, complete the 3-step Azure account creation with the same MSA:
        1. Profile information: country/region (matching billing address), name, notification email, phone, and human verification.
        2. Address information: billing address and required consents.
        3. Payment information: cardholder name, card number, expiration, CVV, and billing address.
      • The country/region cannot be changed later; if the selected country doesn’t match the billing address or supported regions, the offer may not be available.
    4. Use a supported credit card in the correct name/region
      • A credit card is required for identity verification and to enable services beyond the credits.
      • The billing address for the card must match bank records and the Azure profile country/region.
      • If one card is rejected, use another standard bank-issued credit card that matches the startup’s billing country/region.
    5. Check if the MSA already redeemed credits elsewhere
      • If the MSA has already redeemed Azure credits from another Microsoft program, the system can block new startup credits for that same account.
      • In such cases, finish using existing credits or contact Program Support from the Azure Portal to review eligibility.
    6. If the issue persists, use Program Support
      • Once signed into the Azure Portal with the correct MSA, use the Microsoft for Startups experience to submit a program support request so the team can check the specific account and offer status.

Following these steps—using a single, eligible personal MSA, aligning country/region and billing details, and ensuring the card and profile match—aligns the account with the documented requirements for Microsoft for Startups credits and resolves most eligibility/account-type errors.
