Detaching payments card details

Hello bushra khaled, this usually happens when Azure won’t let you detach/delete the stored payment method because there are still conditions that keep it “in use” from a billing perspective (even if the trial subscription you expected is gone).

Understand why the card can’t be detached: Azure only allows detaching/deleting a payment method after all required detach conditions are satisfied, which can include:

• Outstanding charges (past due invoices) → you must pay them
• Recurring charges set to auto-renew (ex: certain agreements/subscriptions/reservations/savings plans/Microsoft 365 auto-renew) → you must cancel recurring charges
• Pending charges
• Active subscriptions / active billing period limitations (depending on billing cycle)

Also, regardless of subscription status, you generally must cancel the subscription(s) to delete the associated payment method.

What to do in the Azure portal

1. Check for outstanding (past-due) invoices
   • Go to Cost Management + Billing
   • Go to Invoices
   • Look for any invoices with Past Due status and settle them
2. Check for recurring charges
   • Go to Cost Management + Billing
   • Select Billing scopes → pick your billing account
   • Under Products + services, open Recurring charges
   • Cancel any recurring charges that are still active (so the payment method can be detached)
3. Check for pending charges
   • Go to Cost Management + Billing → your billing account → Invoices
   • Look for items with Due on date (pending charges)
   • Detach/deletion won’t work until pending charges are paid/closed out
4. Check the billing profile payment methods
   • Go to Cost Management + Billing
   • Select Billing profiles
   • Choose the billing profile using that payment method
   • Go to Payment methods
   • If delete/detach is unavailable, the portal should show the unmet conditions (use those links to jump to the exact place to fix them)

If your trial subscription is deleted but the billing profile/payment method remains

Even after you cancel/delete a subscription, billing-profile actions can lag due to billing cycle timing. If the portal still shows conditions like “pending” or an active billing period, retry after the billing cycle closes once those conditions clear.

Also note: for Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) accounts, only the user who created the MCA account can delete the payment method.

If you’re still blocked

If you’ve already confirmed there are no past-due invoices, no recurring charges, and no pending charges, but the portal still won’t detach/delete the default payment method, the likely next step is to involve support to remove it from the backend after verifying the billing state.
