The Microsoft 365 Family plan provides up to 6 TB of secure cloud storage—1TB per member. You cannot use the storage of other family members.

However, the plan owner can purchase additional cloud storage, but only for himself. Have you purchased an additional 5TB of storage?

The "OneDrive full" message is triggered when the Microsoft cloud storage quota is exceeded, not just when OneDrive itself appears under its limit. Several things can cause this mismatch:

    1. Unified Microsoft storage is over quota
      • Microsoft uses a unified storage quota across OneDrive, Outlook.com email, and other services.
      • If the unified quota is exceeded, the account shows as full even if OneDrive alone (for example 1.9 TB / 6 TB) appears under its own limit.
      • When unified storage is exceeded:
        • New files cannot be uploaded, edited, or synced to OneDrive; existing files become read‑only.
        • Email in Outlook.com cannot be sent or received, even if email storage itself is not full.
    2. OneDrive quota vs. what the client shows
      • The OneDrive sync client or local view may show 1.9 TB / 6 TB, but the actual cloud quota may differ if:
        • A Microsoft 365 subscription changed or expired.
        • A promotional or bonus storage offer expired.
      • In those cases, the effective quota can be lower than what is expected, and the service will report "full" once that lower limit is exceeded.
    3. Shared folders and Recycle Bin count toward the quota
      • Shared folders added to OneDrive and items in the OneDrive Recycle Bin count toward the storage quota.
      • Even if the main folder list looks under quota, large shared folders or a full Recycle Bin can push the account over the limit.
    4. Delay after freeing space or upgrading
      • After deleting files or purchasing additional storage, it can take up to 24–48 hours for the new quota and usage to fully propagate across the account and all clients.
      • During this time, OneDrive may still show as full and remain read‑only.

    To resolve:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft account in a browser and check the overall Microsoft storage status (unified storage, not just OneDrive) and confirm whether any Outlook.com mailbox or shared folders are pushing the account over quota.
    2. Empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin and remove any large shared folders that are no longer needed.
    3. If storage was recently upgraded or files were deleted, wait up to 24–48 hours for the quota to update.
    4. If the OneDrive client still shows full after that, unlink and re‑link the OneDrive account on the device so it refreshes against the updated cloud quota.

If the account remains over quota after these steps and time window, contact Microsoft Support as described in the OneDrive help article so an agent can check the actual quota and usage on the backend.
