Hello,

I encountered an issue when creating or reviewing a Microsoft Purview account.

Scenario:

I am trying to use Microsoft Purview and noticed that the available location (region) options seem to be limited. Only US region appears to be available, and I cannot find or select other regions.

Environment:

  • Azure tenant: [Global Azure ]
  • Purview account creation method: [Portal ]

Questions:

  1. Is new Microsoft Purview account restricted to specific regions only?
  2. Are there any prerequisites or configurations required to enable other regions?

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks!

    1. Microsoft Purview accounts are restricted to specific regions, and the list shown in the Location dropdown is filtered based on what Purview supports and how the tenant is mapped. When creating the first Microsoft Purview account in a tenant, the location is restricted to the region that matches the Microsoft Entra ID home region. This is the region where the Purview account and metadata are stored, even though data sources can be in other regions. The new Microsoft Purview portal experience also uses a single, tenant-level Purview account mapped to a specific region according to the tenant’s Microsoft Entra country/region. The mapping between Purview account locations and tenant locations is predefined (for example, US tenants map to US regions such as East US, West US, etc.). Microsoft 365 GCC regions are not currently supported.
    2. There are no additional configurations in the portal to “unlock” more regions beyond what is allowed for the tenant. For a tenant’s first Purview account, the region is constrained to the Microsoft Entra home region; other regions will not appear in the list. Purview does not support moving accounts across regions, so the correct region must be chosen at creation time. If there are security policy or data residency constraints that prevent using the mapped region when upgrading or creating a Purview account, the documented guidance is to contact Microsoft support to address those constraints.
