Hey there! Nice to meet you!

You can update your security info on account.microsoft.com > click "Security" > "Manage how I sign in" > select "Add another way to sign in to your account" to add your updated verification method first > then remove your outdated recovery phone number by clicking the option "Remove"

You may be asked to wait 30 days in order to update your security info. During this time, you will not be able to sign in to sites or services with your account.

Please check this link for more information regarding security info change: https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/manage/what-does-security-info-change-is-still-pending-mean#:~:text=You%20were%20the%20person%20who%20removed%20the%20security,these%20security%20proofs%20to%20complete%20the%20cancel%20request.

Lastly, it is no longer possible to add a phone number as a verification method, as Microsoft has stated that they have already phased this option out, particularly under "Note" https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/manage/microsoft-account-security-info-verification-codes

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl

To update the phone number used for verification on an Outlook.com / Microsoft account, the phone must be added or changed in the Microsoft account security/alias settings rather than inside Outlook for Windows itself.

Follow these steps (no need to just sit and wait; the change is done online):

    1. Go to the Microsoft account “how you sign in” / alias page:
    2. Sign in with the Outlook.com account.
    3. Under Your info, choose one of:
      • Add phone number to add 484-542-6640 as a new alias, or
      • Remove next to an old phone number if it is no longer valid.
    4. When prompted, complete any verification (code sent to an existing email/phone).
    5. Confirm that 484-542-6640 now appears in the list of aliases/security info.

If the goal is specifically to add a phone as security info (for verification codes):

    1. Go to the Microsoft account “how you sign in” page:
    2. Select Add phone number.
    3. Enter 484-542-6640 and follow the instructions to verify it (a code will be sent to that number).

There is no need to wait without doing anything; the update only happens after completing these online steps and verifying the new number.

If there is no access to the old phone/email and the sign-in page offers verification options that no longer work, choose I don't have any of these and follow the prompts to replace the security info. Be aware that replacing all security info can put the account into a restricted state for 30 days while the change is processed.
