The prompt to add or change a phone number does not always appear automatically in Windows or Microsoft services. Phone numbers are managed centrally on the Microsoft account, so the change must be done directly in the account settings instead of waiting for a prompt.
Use these steps to add or change the phone number on the Microsoft account:
- Go to the Microsoft account alias management page: Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and sign in.
- Under Your info / Account alias, review the existing email addresses and phone numbers.
- To add a phone number, select Add phone number, follow the verification steps, and complete the process.
- To change a phone number, either:
- Add the new phone number with Add phone number, verify it, then select Remove next to the old number, or
- If the old number is the primary alias, first add a new phone number or email, select Make primary on the new one, then remove the old number.
If the goal is to stop repeated prompts to add a recovery phone number, confirm and refresh security info:
- Go to the Microsoft account security page: https://account.microsoft.com/security.
- Under Security info, confirm the recovery phone number is listed and correct.
- If the prompt continues, remove the existing phone number from Security info, then add it again and complete verification.
For specific apps (Skype, Teams, Skype for Business), phone numbers may also need to be updated inside the app or profile:
- Skype profile number
- Sign in to the Skype profile page.
- Go to Contact details → Edit Profile.
- Update the phone number field, select Save, then select Verify phone number and complete verification.
- Microsoft Teams (free)
- Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft and add or change the phone number as above.
- Make the new number Make primary if needed, then remove the old one.
- Sign out and sign back in to Teams (desktop) or reinstall the app (mobile) so the change is reflected.
If none of these flows ever show a phone-number-related prompt, changes can still be completed entirely through the Microsoft account pages above; the prompt is not required for the update.
